Apele Române suplimentează debitul Dunării pentru funcționarea în siguranță a Centralei Cernavodă • Newsweek România
The National Administration Apele Române is increasing the Danube's flow to ensure the safe operation of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant amid severe drought conditions. From October 10 to 18, 2026, an emergency plan was activated to temporarily boost the water discharge from the Iezer reservoir by 20 cubic meters per second. This decision, made by the National Emergency Situations Committee, aims to prevent operational risks due to the Danube's critical low levels. The river's flow dropped below 1,200 cubic meters per second, threatening the cooling system of the nuclear reactors. A coordinated operation across multiple watersheds is underway, ensuring that regional water reserves remain intact while monitoring discharge levels closely. The measures are temporary and proportional to the current hydrological challenges, prioritizing national energy infrastructure safety.
