Romanian consumers may benefit from lower energy tariffs by shifting usage to off-peak hours, according to MEP Andi Cristea. The European Commission's proposal aims to reward smart consumption amidst an energy alert in Romania. It does not immediately lower prices but addresses network tariffs and electricity taxation. The proposal includes differentiated tariffs based on consumption times, encouraging users to consume during less busy periods. Additionally, it suggests that electricity taxes should not exceed those on gas, promoting electrification. The plan also targets smart meter installation for at least 50% of consumers by 2030. The final regulations will be negotiated by the European Parliament and Council.
