Approximately 5.1 million Romanians live abroad, with the largest communities in the UK, Spain, and Italy. In 2025, over 54,900 Romanians permanently left the country, marking the highest emigration rate in 34 years. A significant number of young Romanians view working abroad as a way to improve their living standards, although many do not plan to leave in the near future. The Romanian community in the UK is the largest among EU citizens, with 1.02 million holding legal residency. In Germany, 903,770 Romanians are registered, boasting the highest employment rate among EU nationals. The Romanian diaspora is also substantial in Spain and Italy, with many working in various sectors. Despite a positive international migration balance, Romania faces demographic challenges, including an aging population and declining birth rates.
