Romania is facing a significant heatwave, with temperatures reaching 38-40°C, while the national energy system is impacted by the shutdown of nuclear reactors due to cooling water shortages. This situation is expected to create a critical energy imbalance, especially during peak consumption times. The extreme heat is likely to increase energy demand significantly, with daytime consumption estimated to rise to 7,800-8,200 MW and evening peaks reaching 8,400-8,600 MW. The shutdown of both nuclear reactors will lead to a total nuclear contribution of 0 MW, while solar production will also be affected by high temperatures. Consequently, Romania may need to rely on energy imports to meet demand, potentially exceeding the maximum import capacity.
