An analysis by the Intelligent Energy Association reveals that Romania's coal energy was not cheap but rather masked costs through various financial mechanisms. The report highlights that energy costs were hidden in subsidies, public investments, and debts, leading to a misconception of affordable domestic energy. After 2013, the costs for coal producers consistently exceeded market prices, exacerbated by rising CO₂ certificate prices and structural issues in the energy sector. The 2022 energy crisis showed that while market prices surged, coal did not become competitive. The analysis argues that Romania needs to invest in modern energy solutions rather than relying on outdated coal production, which has proven to be an expensive illusion.
