As of June 2026, private pension funds in Romania managed assets worth 246.2 billion lei, marking a 39% increase from the previous year. Alexandru Petrescu, head of ASF, highlighted the growing importance of private pensions in the Romanian economy, emphasizing their role in long-term capital accumulation and investment. The majority of assets are held in Pillar II, with 237.4 billion lei, while Pillar III accounts for 8.78 billion lei. The number of participants has reached 9.64 million, reinforcing the funds' position as significant institutional investors. Petrescu noted that while market price evaluations can lead to short-term volatility, the system has shown resilience through financial shocks. He stressed the need to view private pensions as a long-term investment solution, especially in light of demographic challenges.
