Romania plans to resume sheep exports by the end of the year, contingent on a national vaccination campaign starting around October 1. The head of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority, Alexandru Bociu, expressed optimism about the timeline, stating that vaccination against sheep pox and other diseases could be completed within 30-45 days. The country currently has 1.3 million doses of free vaccine available, with a total need of about 11 million doses. The vaccination campaign will be funded by the Romanian state, ensuring no costs for farmers. Bociu is also negotiating with the European Commission for additional financial support. The resumption of exports is crucial for the sheep sector, which has expanded its markets in recent years, including Algeria and Morocco. The authority is also ensuring sufficient veterinary personnel for the vaccination effort.
