Individuals with severe disabilities can choose between a personal assistant employed by the municipality or a monthly caregiver allowance. This choice is available only if their disability certificate specifies the need for a personal assistant. The caregiver allowance is provided directly to the individual, allowing them to manage independently or with family support. Those with severe visual impairments also have this option. However, individuals with accentuated disabilities cannot have a personal assistant or receive a special allowance for one; they only receive a general disability allowance. The caregiver allowance is linked to the minimum wage, currently set at 2,162.5 lei, while personal assistants earn a base salary of 4,325 lei, which can increase with additional benefits.
