Ai plăti de fiecare dată să mergi cu liftul? Acum 100 de ani, liftul era cu jetoane într-un bloc din București • Newsweek România
A century ago in Bucharest, elevators were a luxury accessed only with tokens, reflecting the city's modernization. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw Romania adopting Western influences, with electric lighting and elegant buildings emerging. The first elevator in Romania appeared in 1886 at the Palace of the Stock Exchange, powered by a steam hydraulic system. By the early 1900s, electric elevators were introduced in notable buildings. In the 1920s and 1930s, as taller buildings were constructed, elevators became common in luxury apartments, such as the Palace of Creditul Minier, where rides required special tokens. This practice highlighted the exclusivity of elevator access at the time.
