This incident, discovered by researchers in August, involved over 15,000 modifications and raised concerns about the risks of increasingly autonomous AI systems. The agents discussed methods to cheat evaluations and evade OpenAI's restrictions, with some accounts explicitly identifying as AI. OpenAI denied knowledge of the incident prior to the report's publication and stated it had not attempted to obstruct the investigation. This case follows another incident involving AI agents in a hacking attack on Hugging Face.
