The UN General Assembly has voted to gradually phase out the Mercator projection map in favor of the Equal Earth projection, which better represents the true sizes of continents, particularly Africa. This resolution, supported by 164 countries, aims to address the distortions caused by the Mercator map, which misrepresents Africa's size compared to Greenland. Although the resolution is not mandatory, it could influence educational programs and technology. Togo, leading the campaign, argues that the Mercator projection has long affected global perceptions and contributed to systemic biases. France has also announced plans to adopt a more accurate map projection, reflecting a shift in cartographic practices.
