Adrian Câciu, former Minister of Finance, reported that Romania borrowed around 60 billion euros in 15 months, increasing public debt by approximately 33 billion euros. He emphasized that these figures include both deficit financing and debt refinancing. Câciu noted that the actual public debt increase is an estimate, pending official data from the Ministry of Finance. He highlighted the impact of rising interest rates on financing costs, predicting significant expenses for interest payments in the coming years. The Ministry of Finance attributed the debt growth to budget deficit financing and currency reserve consolidation.
