A team of biologists, lacking funding due to Trump administration cuts, created a makeshift lab in a motel room and made a significant discovery regarding the origins of life. They identified two rare unicellular organisms called Paulinella, which may shed light on a crucial evolutionary event when a unicellular organism assimilated a photosynthetic bacterium. This process led to the development of chloroplasts used by plants for photosynthesis. The research, published in the Journal of Phycology, highlights that Paulinella underwent a similar photosynthetic fusion much more recently than previously thought. The discovery was validated in a South Korean lab.
