The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is escalating rapidly, potentially becoming the worst in history, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. With around 4,400 cases and over 2,000 deaths reported, this outbreak is already the second deadliest on record. Tedros emphasized the urgent need for contact tracing and healthcare worker training to manage the crisis effectively. Two vaccines are in early clinical trials, showing promise against the Bundibugyo variant, while another vaccine may also be effective against the current outbreak. The WHO is pushing for rapid clinical studies to combat the virus.
