Yorgen Fenech, a Maltese businessman accused of orchestrating the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, was acquitted by a jury in Malta. Fenech had been charged in 2021 with complicity in murder and conspiracy, but maintained his innocence throughout the trial. The jury's decision concludes the legal proceedings against the last of six defendants in the case. Caruana Galizia was killed in a car bomb attack in 2017, known for her investigations into high-level corruption. Her assassination sparked widespread protests and led to the resignation of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat. While Fenech was acquitted, several others have been convicted for their roles in the crime.
