In 2024, about 40.7% of Romanians lived in overcrowded households, significantly higher than the EU average of 16.9%. Despite this, around 94% owned their homes, one of the highest rates in the EU. The 2021 census revealed that 25% of homes in Romania were unoccupied. FIDES and Concordia will host the Romania Affordable Housing Summit 2026 on October 5, focusing on financing and developing affordable housing. The president of FIDES emphasized the need for a coherent housing strategy to address these issues. Recent EU policies aim to support affordable housing projects, with the European Investment Bank targeting €6 billion in funding by 2026. The EU requires approximately 650,000 additional homes annually, with an estimated investment need of €150 billion per year to meet this demand.
