In Romania, over 1,400 cases of driving under the influence of psychoactive substances were reported in the first eight months of 2026. The Ministry of Internal Affairs revealed that 83% of preliminary positive drug tests were later confirmed through toxicological analysis. Additionally, around 8,000 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol were recorded during the same period, totaling approximately 9,400 cases for both categories. The law stipulates severe penalties for those caught driving under the influence, including imprisonment and the prohibition of certain rights. The presence of psychoactive substances must also demonstrate their impact on driving ability to constitute an offense.
