On September 6, humanity reached "Plastic Overshoot Day," marking the point where annual plastic waste exceeds global management capacity. A report by Earth Action predicts that by 2026, around 72 million tons of plastic waste will be mismanaged, representing 31.6% of total global plastic waste. Despite improvements in waste management, the overall volume of plastic waste continues to rise, increasing from 202 million tons in 2021 to nearly 227 million tons by 2026. The report highlights the dangers of plastic, which contains thousands of harmful chemicals, and notes significant disparities in waste generation among countries. Recycling alone cannot solve the issue as production rates outpace management improvements, necessitating a reduction in plastic use.
