The General Prosecutor's Office has dismantled an organized crime group consisting of Romanian and Moldovan citizens, leading to the arrest of six individuals. Over 70 million counterfeit cigarettes were smuggled into Romania disguised as vegetable and fruit shipments. The operation took place from August 29 to 31, 2026, with significant seizures made during traffic stops and subsequent searches across multiple counties. The total estimated damage to the state budget is around 62.5 million lei. The arrested individuals will be presented to the court for preventive arrest.
