In Romania, 68 hospitals operate in buildings constructed before 1900, according to a Court of Accounts analysis. Many of these facilities face challenges in adapting to modern safety and infection control standards due to their age. The analysis covered 310 public hospitals, revealing that while most were built between 1900 and 1970, some date back over 200 years. The report highlights specific hospitals, such as the 'Sfântul Spiridon' in Iași, which has structures from the 18th century. Although older buildings do not necessarily correlate with higher infection rates, their infrastructure poses significant challenges. The government is investing in modernizing hospital facilities to improve infection control and patient safety.
