The Cluj-Napoca Local Council approved a legal mechanism for the municipality to purchase hundreds of homes for residents of informal settlements, including Pata Rât. Mayor Emil Boc stated that the municipality will use the SIEG tool for this acquisition, ensuring compliance with public service and state aid legislation. The program aims to buy around 350 homes over the next years, funded by European and local budgets, with an estimated cost of over 400 million lei from 2026 to 2036. The initiative also includes social services for the Roma community, emphasizing integration rather than segregation. Families will receive support services such as counseling, education access, medical services, and job assistance. Boc highlighted the importance of breaking the cycle of informal settlements by not allowing new shanties to replace those removed.
