August 23, 1944, marks a pivotal moment in Romania's history when King Michael I dismissed Marshal Ion Antonescu, shifting Romania's allegiance from the Axis Powers to the Allies during World War II. This decision ended military governance and initiated negotiations for an armistice with the Soviet Union. Following the dismissal, a new government led by General Constantin Sănătescu was formed, comprising democratic party representatives and communists. Romania regained Northern Transylvania but lost territories to the Soviet Union. The day became a national holiday under the communist regime, celebrated as the liberation from fascist occupation, while the role of King Michael I was downplayed in favor of communist contributions.
