18 august 1844, ziua care a schimbat lupta cu incendiile în București

August 18 marks 182 years since the establishment of the Bucharest Fire Brigade, the first permanent military unit in Romania dedicated to fire prevention and extinguishing. The need for a specialized unit became evident in the early 19th century due to frequent fires in Bucharest. Under Prince Gheorghe Bibescu, a law was enacted on August 18, 1844, creating the brigade, which initially had 286 members and six sections. The brigade's role expanded beyond firefighting, notably participating in the 1848 Battle of Dealul Spirii against Ottoman forces, which solidified its place in Romanian military history. September 13 is now celebrated as Firefighters' Day in Romania.
