Environmental inspectors in Buzau imposed fines exceeding 760,000 lei on businesses for non-compliance with the Deposit-Return System (SGR) regulations. Many consumers in 17 communes lack the ability to return containers for refunds. The National Environmental Guard reported that retailers must accept SGR packaging regardless of purchase location and without requiring receipts. In 2025, 123 inspections led to 67 fines totaling 507,500 lei, while 42 inspections in 2026 resulted in 26 fines of 253,500 lei. Authorities noted that several retailers failed to comply with SGR legislation, with only 6,437.37 tons collected last year, ranking Buzau 21st in SGR collection. The SGR program requires consumers to pay a 0.50 lei deposit on certain beverage containers, refundable upon return.
