In August 2026, 14 people died in the Romanian mountains, while 667 tourists were rescued by 75 Salvamont teams. The National Association of Mountain Rescuers in Romania reported a total of 542 rescue operations, which is a decrease from the previous year. Despite the high number of tourists, the overall number of rescues was lower than in August 2025. The operations included various methods, such as drones and search dogs. The National Dispatch Center received numerous emergency calls, highlighting its role in both response and prevention. The capacity of the rescue teams remains limited, with only 18.75% operational coverage, yet they managed a 100% response rate to all requests for assistance. The ongoing Project -1 aims to reduce mountain accidents through education and awareness.
