The Jamaican delegation, led by Culture Minister Olivia Grange, aims to determine the legality of slavery under English common law and whether the UK has a legal obligation to provide reparations. This marks Jamaica as the first Commonwealth nation to pursue this legal route. The petition requests the king to refer three legal questions to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Jamaica estimates it is owed around $10 billion for damages caused by slavery, while the UK has consistently rejected reparations claims. The delegation will also discuss the repatriation of cultural artifacts with the British Museum.
