A study by Eurostat reveals that nearly 1 in 12 Romanians cannot afford a personal car, with 8.1% in 2025, above the EU average of 5.5%. This marks a significant improvement from 15.6% in 2024 and 35.5% in 2015. Romania ranks 6th in the EU for those unable to afford a car, following Finland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Denmark. The data only includes those who cannot financially support a car, excluding those who choose not to own one. The lowest percentages are in Cyprus, Slovenia, and Croatia, with 1.6%, 1.7%, and 2.6% respectively. Overall, Romania's situation has improved significantly over the past decade.
