Romania plans to allocate approximately 1.5 billion lei in 2026 for water and sewage investments, prioritizing projects in areas facing infringement procedures from the European Commission. Interim Minister of Environment, Waters, and Forests, Diana Buzoianu, emphasized the need for a national mission to improve water infrastructure, as only 61% of the population is connected to sewage systems. She highlighted the importance of critical infrastructure to withstand extreme weather events and the necessity for households to connect to existing networks. Despite significant investments, some areas remain non-compliant with EU regulations, risking further fines. The upcoming funding will focus on areas with the greatest need for compliance.
