Cum a recuperat România steagul de luptă al lui Ștefan cel Mare? Peste 400 de ani a stat pe Muntele Athos • Newsweek România
Romania has retrieved the battle flag of Stephen the Great after over 400 years at Zografou Monastery on Mount Athos. This flag, created in 1500, is the oldest standard of Moldavia and a Byzantine art piece. It was donated by Stephen to the monastery and was recovered in 1917 during World War I. The flag features a silver-embroidered prayer and an image of Saint George slaying a three-headed dragon, symbolizing Stephen's enemies. The flag's recovery involved French military assistance and was officially handed over in Paris before returning to Romania in 1919, where it is now displayed at the National Museum of History.
