Romania is negotiating a joint arms procurement with Ukraine under the SAFE program, as the deadline for individual contracts has passed. The project, valued at over 800 million euros, aims to equip defense and public order forces with NATO-standard individual weapons. Sig Sauer has been awarded the contract, but the selection process faced challenges from Italian manufacturer Beretta. A cooperation agreement has been signed, but a common procurement agreement is needed to secure funding. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is coordinating the acquisition, which includes both weapons and ammunition, while the Ministry of Defense focuses solely on weapons. Sig Sauer plans to transfer production technology to Romanian facilities.
