Australia has confirmed its first mass mortality case of wildlife linked to the highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza, with numerous great egrets found dead on an island in South Australia. The birds were discovered during an aerial surveillance operation and tested positive for H5. Prior to this, Australia was the last continent free from the virus, which had only been detected in migratory seabirds. Agriculture Minister Julie Collins noted that significant losses were expected as the virus spreads, but there is no evidence of transmission to domestic birds. Environment Minister Murray Watt warned of potential new outbreaks affecting native wildlife. Authorities have activated a national response plan supported by additional funding.
