The modernization and electrification of the Bucharest-Giurgiu railway is currently at 19% completion after seven months of work. The project, valued at 2.1 billion lei, includes a complete overhaul of the railway infrastructure and the implementation of the European ERTMS Level 2 traffic management system. Construction began in March 2026 and is expected to take 36 months in total, with 6 months for design and 30 months for execution. Significant progress has been made on various sections, including the removal of old tracks and the construction of new platforms and drainage systems. The project aims to modernize 93.45 kilometers of railway, electrify the entire route, and enhance signaling and telecommunications systems. Completion is projected for September 2028.
