Ciuma, boala ce a speriat Europa și România. Populația Bucureștiului, redusă cu o treime de ciuma lui Caragea • Newsweek România

The recent death of a lab worker in Siberia has brought the plague back into the spotlight, likely caused by the Yersinia pestis bacterium. Historically, Europe has faced three major plague pandemics, with the last significant outbreak in Romania occurring in the early 19th century, known as the "Plague of Caragea." This epidemic decimated Bucharest's population, killing tens of thousands. The Black Death, which ravaged Europe from 1347 to 1352, is estimated to have killed 25 to 30 million people. Although Romania has not seen plague cases for nearly two centuries, isolated incidents have been reported in Russia, raising concerns about the disease's persistence in endemic regions.
