Cristian, a commune in Sibiu County, is the only place in Romania where streets are numbered with Roman numerals. Documented since 1223, it has a rich history, including a visit from Mihai Viteazul after the Battle of Șelimbăr in 1599. The commune features 28 streets, all identified by Roman numerals, with 24 being older and four newly created. While some streets have popular names, they are not officially marked. The tradition of numbered streets is linked to emigration patterns to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Unlike Pecica, which uses Arabic numerals, Cristian uniquely employs Roman numerals for all its streets.
