Global life expectancy has returned to pre-pandemic levels, reaching 73.3 years in 2023, according to WHO. However, premature deaths from chronic diseases remain a concern. Healthy life expectancy is slower to recover, now at 62.8 years. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death, with ischemic heart disease responsible for 16% of fatalities. COVID-19 has dropped out of the top ten causes of death for the first time since the pandemic began, with 900,000 deaths reported in 2023.
