Cancerul care poate fi prevenit. Ce spune un studiu nou despre infecții

A recent study indicates that one in eight new cancer cases globally in 2024 is linked to infections, totaling 2.3 million cases. The International Agency for Research on Cancer identified 12 infections associated with cancer, with five being particularly significant. Helicobacter pylori is linked to 760,000 cases, followed by HPV with 750,000, hepatitis B with 360,000, Epstein-Barr virus with 260,000, and hepatitis C with 160,000 cases. Many of these cancers could be preventable through vaccination and treatment. The study highlights the importance of infection control in reducing cancer burden, especially in low- and middle-income countries. However, researchers acknowledge limitations, as they relied on population estimates and did not track individual patients. Experts emphasize that most individuals with these infections do not develop cancer and recommend vaccinations for prevention.
