Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote and Kenyan President William Ruto have officially launched a $16 billion oil refinery project in Kenya, aimed at processing 700,000 barrels daily. The refinery, expected to be completed by 2030, seeks to meet the rising demand for petroleum products in East Africa, reduce local fuel costs, and lessen foreign currency expenditures on energy imports. The project allows regional governments to hold a 30% stake. Despite its economic potential, the initiative faces local opposition and environmental concerns, particularly regarding its impact on the UNESCO-listed city of Lamu. Dangote attributes the opposition to businesses threatened by the refinery's construction.
