EU member states have backed proposals to grant heavy industries additional free pollution certificates to enhance their competitiveness. The ETS system, established in 2005, aims to reduce emissions by 2030. The Council of the EU announced support for an additional 121 million free certificates for 2026-2030, potentially saving companies around €8.25 billion. Beneficiaries include chemical producers and metal processing companies. While the ETS was designed to gradually reduce free certificates, this temporary measure aims to support industries facing international competition. Final negotiations on the rules will occur with the European Parliament, with broader ETS reforms expected by 2027.
