Japan has requested a new modification of the world map from the UN, despite a recent resolution adopting the current version. The request stems from the representation of the disputed Kuril Islands, which Japan refers to as "northern territories." A Japanese government representative stated that the current map contradicts Tokyo's position, leading to a formal protest. Tensions between Russia and Japan have escalated, particularly after military exercises and the inauguration of a controversial monument in the Kurils. The territorial dispute over the islands has prevented a peace treaty since World War II. Recently, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to phase out the Mercator projection in favor of more accurate maps, with 164 countries voting in favor.
